Behind the Mask

Their whispers echo across the room,

Yet when you come up close,

Or rather when they lure you close,

With their sweet words and charming looks,

They greet you with a smile,

A thinly veiled painted smile,

If only you knew,

If only you knew what darkness lay within their hearts,

These folks have no shame,

No empathy,

No sense of loyalty,

For to them you are a means to an end,

A never ending supply of fodder,

They laugh and belittle your interests,

They mock your very existence,

They make you question your sanity,

But the moment it is their turn,

They hiss and recoil,

They retreat to the dark corners from once they came,

For they can’t accept their mask falling apart,

They refuse to accept their own flaws,

They are perfect and must remain perfect,

If you so much as to dare peel away at their disguise,

They will lash out,

They will scream and backbite,

These souls deserve no empathy,

Regardless of their pain,

For they continue the cycle of years of hate and abuse,

Whereas you decide to end it.
